The Social Work curriculum involves two components: social work and professional level social work. Social work students must successfully complete the following courses to apply for the professional level social work component: English Composition (6 hours), SOCL 1001 or PSYC 2001 (3 hours), MATH 1011 (3 hours), and SOCW 1001 , SOCW 1002 , and SOCW 2005 . Application to the professional program can be submitted while enrolled in SOCW 2005 . The Social Work professional level component consists of approximately 4 academic semesters. The Social Work Program has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) since 1977.
Admission to The Social Work Major
The Social Work major offers a broad liberal arts base of study that includes sociology, psychology, biology, and social work courses. Social Work courses cover content in human behavior, the social environment, social welfare policy and services, social research, social work practice, and field practicum. These courses provide the liberal arts core and social work foundation necessary to develop the knowledge, values, and skills needed to prepare students for beginning generalist social work practice. Specific courses require experiential learning for two semesters, service learning and a practicum requirement of 32 hours per week for one semester.
Applicants for admission to the Social Work professional level component must meet the requirements for admission to the University, be enrolled as a social work major, and fulfill the requirements of the social work segment:
- A grade of “C” or above in the following courses: ENGL 1001 and ENGL 1002 , SOCL 1001 or PSYC 2001 , MATH 1011 , SOCW 1001 , SOCW 1002 , and SOCW 2005 .
- A minimum GPA of 2.3 is required for the degree.
Application forms for admission to the professional level component of Social Work may be obtained by downloading from the ULM website/Social Work http://www.ulm.edu/socialwork. Completed applications are to be submitted to the Admissions Committee chairperson during the first four weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters. The Admissions Committee will review applications, interview applicants, and make decisions regarding the status of the applicants. The department head of Social Work will notify students in writing of the Committee’s decision. Students not admitted to the Social Work professional component may reapply the following semester. Those not admitted into the Social Work professional component will not be allowed to enroll in SOCW 3001 - Interviewing and the Helping Relationship , SOCW 3015 - Practice I , SOCW 4016 - Practice II , SOCW 4021 - Field Education in Social Work , or SOCW 4022 - Field Education Seminar .
Social Work majors at the professional level are also required to apply for admission into the field practicum. An application for the practicum must be made to the Coordinator of Field Education during the first month of the Fall or Spring semesters prior to a student’s enrollment in Field Education in Social Work. Forms may be obtained by downloading from the ULM website/Social Work http://www.ulm.edu/socialwork. To be eligible for the practicum, students must have completed all 1000- and 2000-level courses, earned a grade of “C” or higher in all courses required for a major, and earned a GPA of 2.3 in all courses required for the degree. A student must observe all prerequisites in the sequential pursuance of courses leading to a baccalaureate degree in social work. Generally, enrollment in the practicum occurs during the semester prior to a student’s graduation. The Coordinator of Field Education is required to make a reasonable effort to assist a student in securing a placement. The Social Work major, however, not the University, is ultimately responsible for obtaining and retaining a placement under the direction of the Coordinator of Field Education.
Students unable to obtain an acceptable placement or to complete a practicum successfully will not be awarded the degree and are advised to change to a curriculum in which they can meet degree requirements.
Retention in the Social Work Major
Pre-Professional Work and Social Work professional level majors who earn less than a “C” in any Social Work course will be allowed to repeat the course. Failure to achieve a progressive grade the second time will result in suspension from the Social Work Program for one semester. Students, classified as Social Work professional level majors, who are suspended from the program or the University, or who resign or withdraw from the University, will have their status reviewed by the Department and will be required to resubmit an application for re-admission into the professional level program.
