Program Admission


In addition to the university requirements for admission to the Graduate School at ULM, a candidate for this degree and certification or alternative certification must hold, or be eligible to hold, a valid Louisiana Type B or Level 2 teaching certificate or its equivalent, have a minimum of 3 years experience teaching in a public, private, charter, or magnet school, have a minimum of 2.5 undergraduate GPA, and pass the state examinations specified. 

Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher, or 3.0 GPA on last 60 hours, (based on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited university will qualify for regular admission status.

Undergraduate GPA of 2.5 - 2.74, or 2.75 on last 60 hours,  (based on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited university will qualify for conditional admission status

Educational Leadership allows a maximum of 6 credit hours of graduate credit appropriate to the student’s degree program may be transferred from other institutions offering regionally accredited graduate programs and must be within six (6) years of date of graduation.

Candidates must be able to effectively utilize instructional leadership technology before progressing beyond the Teacher Leader Endorsement. Completion of the following courses and passing the necessary examinations will qualify the candidate/graduate for Louisiana educational leadership certification level 1to fill school and district leadership position (e.g. assistant principal, principal, supervisor of instruction, supervisor of child welfare and attendance, special education supervisor, or comparable leader position).

All educational leaders will progress through three levels of educational leader coursework. Tier I is required to qualify for the Teacher Leader Endorsement. Tier II is coursework involving theory and its practical application and Tier III is the internship. Completion of all three Tiers including required state examinations are necessary for certification.

Program Requirements


A candidate for this degree and certification or alternative certification, must hold a valid teacher’s certificate issued by the Louisiana Department of Education or its equivalent, have a minimum of 2.5 undergraduate GPA, and pass the state examinations specified. Candidates must be able to effectively utilize instructional leadership technology before progressing beyond the Teacher Leader Endorsement.

Candidates take a total of 36 credit hours for the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, including 6 hours of internship, and must pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) exam to graduate as certified educational leaders in the state of Louisiana. 

Students already possessing a master’s degree may opt to pursue the Add-on Certification in Educational Leadership instead of a second master’s.  The Add-on Certification in Educational Leadershipis 30 credit hours, including 6 hours of internship, and requires passing of the SLLA to finish as a certified educational leader in the state.

Completion of the following courses and passing the necessary examinations will qualify the candidate/graduate for Louisiana certification as Teacher Leader preK-12, Instructional Supervisor, Child Welfare and Attendance Officer, Supervisor/Director of Special Education, and Principal:

Note: To receive graduate credit for a 4000-level course designated “For Undergraduate and Graduates,” a student must be in graduate admission status at the time credit is earned in the course. Credit earned in undergraduate admission status cannot be changed to graduate credit.
