Program Admission
All applicants for admission to the Master of Arts degree program in English must meet the following criteria:
Regular Admission
Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree from a college or university accredited and recognized at the institutional level by the US Department of Education (USDOE) with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or a 2.75 GPA on the last 60 hours of attempted coursework to be regularly admitted.
or
Applicants who have earned any graduate or terminal degree from a from a college or university accredited and recognized at the institutional level by the US Department of Education (USDOE) will qualify for regular admission to a master’s program provided they meet all other eligibility requirements.
and
18 hours of prior undergraduate English courses (12 upper level, 6 lower level) with a 3.0 grade point average.
Conditional Admission
Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree from a college or university accredited and recognized at the institutional level by the US Department of Education (USDOE) with a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale or a 2.50 GPA on the last 60 hours of attempted coursework to be conditionally admitted.
or
minimum formula score of GPA (either cumulative or last 60 hours) x GRE (Q+V) = 622.6
and
18 hours of prior undergraduate English courses (12 upper level, 6 lower level) with a 3.0 grade point average.
Highly qualified applicants from other disciplines will be considered with the submission of a 10-page writing sample.
For regular admission to the Master of Arts in English degree program, international students must submit a minimum score of 500 on the TOEFL or a minimum score of 85 on the Michigan Test.
Applicants who fail to meet the above standards may be admitted on conditional status as recommended by the Graduate Coordinator in English and the Director of the School of Humanities in concert with the Dean of the Graduate School.
Program Requirements
Undergraduate requirements: Credit in six (6) semester hours on the sophomore level, or a reading knowledge of a world language, or completion of ENGL 5083 .
Candidates for the MA in English choose either the Creative Writing option or the Literary Studies option.
Requirements for the Creative Writing option (Thesis): 33 semester hours of English:
ENGL 5000 Proseminar (3 Credit Hours)
Creative Writing Workshops (12 Credit Hours)
Professional Writing Course (3 Credit Hours)
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Course (3 Credit Hours)
Literary Studies Course (3 Credit Hours)
Theoretical/Interdisciplinary/Pedagogical Course (3 Credit Hours)
English Graduate Elective (3 Credit Hours)
ENGL 5099 - Thesis (3 Credit Hours)
Comprehensive Exam
Requirements for the Literary Studies option (Non-thesis): 33 semester hours of English:

Graduate Courses
Note: To receive graduate credit for a 4000-level course designated “For Undergraduate and Graduates,” a student must be in graduate admission status at the time credit is earned in the course. Credit earned in undergraduate admission status cannot be changed to graduate credit.
