Program Admission
In addition to the university requirements for admission to the Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology degree program must meet the following criteria:
- A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5; and
- earned 30 hours of undergraduate credit in Speech-Language Pathology.
Admission is selective and competitive. Applicants who fail to meet the above standards may be admitted on conditional status as recommended by the Graduate Admission and Retention Committee of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology in concert with the Dean of the Graduate School.
Admission Requirements for applicants “Without Background” in Speech-Language Pathology:
Students who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than Speech-Language Pathology, and are interested in ultimately pursuing the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology, are invited to enroll at ULM as an “undeclared” student and take the undergraduate pre-requisite courses in the sequence listed below. This opportunity is four semesters long and students must begin the sequence in the fall semester. By February 1 of the second spring semester, students should submit their application, Letter of Intent, and Letters of Recommendation for the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology program.
Students who complete these SPLP courses at ULM, with a GPA of 3.2 or higher, will receive additional points, toward their admission application, on the SPLP Scoring Form. All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
The graduate program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association therefore, students are also required to complete a Statistics course (3 credits) and a Chemistry or Physics course (3 Credits).

Program Requirements
Undergraduate requirements include 30 semester hours in the area of speech-language pathology.
Requirements for a major (non-thesis) are 37 semester hours of coursework within the area of speech-language pathology, including Speech-Language Pathology SPLP 5005 and excluding clinic and internship.
Requirements for a major (thesis) are 45 semester hours in the area of speech-language pathology, including Speech-Language Pathology SPLP 5005 and six semester hours of SPLP 5099 (Thesis).
A student’s plan of study is to be determined with the guidance of a major professor. Students seeking the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association must meet the academic coursework and clinical practicum requirements established for such certification prior to graduation.
