Students may choose from two concentrations.  In addition, face-to-face students may choose either the thesis or non-thesis option. The non-thesis option is available to online students.

At the time of admission, provide a writing sample such as a book review, honors’ thesis or research paper no longer than 10 pages, double-spaced excluding bibliography to the History Graduate Coordinator. 

Undergraduate requirements are 18 semester hours of social sciences and/or humanities, with at least half of those being from history

 

Program Admission


 

In addition to the university requirements for admission to the Graduate School, all applicants for regular admission to the Master of Arts in History degree program must meet the following criteria:

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 from a regionally accredited university.


Applicants who fail to meet the above standards may be admitted on conditional status as recommended by the Graduate History Admission and Curriculum Committee in concert with the Dean of the Graduate School.

Military History Concentration


Basic core requirement for thesis students in the Master of Arts in History - Military History Concentration is

Fifteen semester hours of history as defined by the following:

  • Choose three courses (9 hours) from:

HIST 5006 - Civil War Military History  
HIST 5017 - The American Revolution  
HIST 5120 - The Holocaust  
HIST 5121 - The Holocaust through Graphic Novels  
HIST 5130 - World War II  
HIST 5136 - American Civil War  
HIST 5146 - U.S. Military History, 1775-1865  
HIST 5147 - Military History, 1865-Present  
HIST 5151 - The Revolutionary Generation  
HIST 5188 - Revolutionary France, 1789-1871  

  • Six hours of non-thesis HIST courses at the 5000 level.

 


Twenty-one semester hours of history as defined by the following:

  • Choose 5 courses (15 hours):

HIST 5006 - Civil War Military History  
HIST 5017 - The American Revolution

Additional requirements for thesis students include:

  • 27 semester hours of HIST electives
