Accreditation


The Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). 

Credentials Deadlines


Individuals interested in applying for admission should apply to the Graduate School and apply to the appropriate Counseling program in the School of Health Professions.

Enrollment is limited and candidates for admission will be required to complete an application package.

Applicants wishing to be considered for Fall admission to the M.S. Counseling program must submit all application materials by November 15 for priority consideration or March 15 for final consideration.

Program Admission


Admission to the Counseling program is at the discretion of the Counseling Program Admissions Committee. In addition to the university requirements for admission to the Graduate School at ULM, applicants for admission to the M.S. in Counseling will meet the following criteria:

Submission Materials

In order to be admitted to the Graduate School, applicants must complete a Graduate School application, submit all undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and submit GRE scores for the General test if needed. In addition, applicants are required to submit a resume of professional qualifications, a letter of intent, and three letters of recommendation for review by the MS Counseling Admission Selection Commmittee.  

GRE General Test. Applicants must submit GRE General test score of 300 or higher if they: (a) have an undergraduate GPA of 2.74 or lower, or (b) have an undergraduate GPA of 2.74 or lower and a graduate GPA of 3.49 or lower.

Regular Status

Applicants must meet one of the following minimum requirements to be regularly admitted:

Any graduate, terminal, or professional degree from a regionally accredited university with a GPA of 3.50 or higher. No GRE required.

OR

a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (based on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited university. No GRE required.

OR

a GPA of 2.75 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework from a regionally accredited university. If overall GPA is 2.74 or lower, GRE required with a score of 300 or higher.

Conditional Status

Applicants must meet one of the following minimum requirements to be conditionally admitted:

Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 (based on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited university. GRE required with a score of 300 or higher.

OR

a GPA of 2.5 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework from a regionally accredited university. GRE required with a score of 300 or higher.

OR

a GPA between 2.2 and 2.49, and a minimum formula score of 660 (2.2 GPA x 300 GRE)

Program Requirements


Requirements for a major:

Counseling studies offers six concentrations: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, Addictions Counseling, Addiction/School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health/Addiction Counseling, Clinical Mental Health/School Counseling.
 

A thesis is optional. Students earning a C in any of the following skills courses: COUN 5065 Practicum in Counseling    , COUN 5011 Advanced Techniques in Counseling  , COUN 6067 Group Counseling  , COUN 5065 Practicum in Counseling  , and COUN 6070 Internship  /COUN 6071 Internship in a School Setting  must retake the course, earning a B or higher. Students may not earn more than 2 Cs during their time of study or face dismissal from the program. Internship must include 600 hours of clinical work documented by the Program Director.


NOTE: The professional code of ethics requires that retention in this program depends on the student’s personal and professional development as well as academic performance. The student will be asked to submit periodic assignments for assessment in this regard. Please consult the Counseling Program Director at 318-342-1245 for further information. Admission to the program is very limited and only highly qualified candidates will be admitted based on available slots in accordance with CACREP’s student-to-faculty guidelines.

Graduate Courses


Note: To receive graduate credit for a 4000-level course designated “For Undergraduate and Graduates,” a student must be in graduate admission status at the time credit is earned in the course. Credit earned in undergraduate admission status cannot be changed to graduate credit.
