COMM 5084 - Persuasion

(3 Cr.) This course is a survey of classical and contemporary thinking on persuasion from a rhetorical perspective.  The study of persuasion dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, and has continued to grow in academic study.  Great thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle spent a great deal of time writing about and discussing the value and parameters of the “art of persuasion”.  Contemporary scholars continue to explore persuasion from a rhetorical perspective and also draw on data generated through social scientific studies.  As such, we will delve into the history, complexity, and power of persuasion, as well as explore contemporary examples of persuasion in public discourse.
